 The human response to grief over time becomes formalized, and turns into a date on the calendar. On the day of mourning a departed loved one, a person will grieve sincerely and formally, but he observes ritual and does not allow himself any entertainment. As a rule, however, this applies only to his own grief, his own personal loss. September 3rd  Today Russia marked a Day of Solidarity in the struggle against terrorism. This is the newest Memorial Day in Russia, which was established by a federal law titled “Days of Russian Military Glory”, dated June 6th, 2005. It is connected with the tragic events in Beslan, when gunmen took hostage one of the city schools. As a result of the terror act in School #1 more than 300 persons, including more than 150 children, died.

It has been three years since the Beslan terrorist attack. It was a national tragedy, and does not go to the periphery of our consciousness. Beslan’s lessons need to be studied, whether the authorities wish it, or not. From every corner of the world, they are now coming to Beslan in order to learn this.
After Beslan, it was clear that we have very well trained storm troopers. These are people who can sweep any obstacle from the face of the earth. What we do not have, however, are enough people who could help avoid such a disastrous turn of events.
